The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved sildenafil (Viagra) for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in men after an initial review of the data.
Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, has been the subject of a public health challenge by the Canadian International Pharmacists Association (CIPA).
A study published in the June 28, 2014, issue of the Journal of Urology reported that up to 90 percent of U. men who take sildenafil for ED will be able to have an improved sexual life. This would include those who took Viagra within 72 hours of taking the medication.
However, the CIPA has been investigating sildenafil for a different reason, as the FDA is not permitted to approve drugs for sexual dysfunction. The agency is also not allowed to approve the use of sildenafil in patients with known serious medical problems.
“The use of Viagra for ED is a very serious problem, and we want to ensure that this use is not justifiable and necessary in these circumstances,” says Dr. Steven Nissen, a urology professor at the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Richmond, Virginia.
The CIPA is investigating whether sildenafil, a drug used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, can be used in a clinical trial.
In a trial involving sildenafil in patients with ED, a study group of men received 10 mg, 25 mg, 50 mg, 100 mg, and 200 mg of sildenafil twice daily for 10 days.
Researchers did not find any statistically significant difference between the treatment groups in the percentage of men who reported improved erections and increased rates of ejaculation.
In the clinical trial, sildenafil was not associated with any clinically significant adverse events in either the sildenafil group or the placebo group. The study did not identify a clinically significant increase in sexual activity.
“We believe the CIPA is the first trial to investigate the use of sildenafil in patients with ED,” said Dr. Eric Wigro, the FDA’s head of drug safety and regulatory affairs. “We are pleased to have the information that will inform our ongoing efforts to bring this medication to market.”
Sildenafil has been prescribed for the treatment of ED since 1992 and is the first drug approved to treat this disorder.
The FDA said sildenafil should not be taken with the following medications:
A study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine suggested that sildenafil was not associated with a clinically significant increase in the number of impotence cases in patients with ED.
Sildenafil was also not associated with any adverse events in a clinical trial.
“Our study shows that sildenafil is not an appropriate treatment for erectile dysfunction,” Dr. Nissen says.
If sildenafil is used to treat ED, the medication will have no effect on the sexual function of patients, said Dr. Steven Nissen, the FDA’s head of drug safety and regulatory affairs.
The FDA recommends that physicians use sildenafil only after consulting with a licensed healthcare provider.
“We hope this information will be used by physicians, pharmacists and physicians,” he said.
The FDA is not required to approve the use of sildenafil in patients with known serious medical problems.

The agency is also investigating the safety and efficacy of sildenafil in patients with heart disease, pulmonary arterial hypertension, and type 2 diabetes.
“Our objective in this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of sildenafil in patients with ED,” said Dr.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a drug called sildenafil in September 2015 to treat erectile dysfunction. The drug has been prescribed to patients with a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The drug was approved for use in men 18 years and older and is available as a generic.
